Handling Bed Wetting With 5 Year Olds
by admin ·
Addressing the issue of a five year old bed wetting is important. Unless dealt with properly, bed wetting at this age can lead to low self esteem, and an avoidance of any activities that might involve sleeping away from home. These symptoms of the underlying bed wetting problem can persists for many years and it is important that they are dealt with properly. Unfortunately, bed wetting is a difficult problem to resolve and one that will require plenty of time and patience from both the parent and the child.
The first thing to do with a bed wetting child is to take them to their family doctor to rule out the unlikely occurrence of a serious medical problems. Most bed wetting is perfectly normal but taking the child to a doctor will ensure that the child is developing normally.
There are several tools that can help with a child bed wetting. One of these is a bed wetting alarm to break the current sleeping habits. The cause of the bed wetting can be the child sleeping too deeply and being woken up by a bed wetting alarm will help the child to develop habits of waking up during the night to use the bathroom. When used with retention training, over time the child can be trained out of their current habits.
Its easy to question your own parenting skill sin this situation, but rest assured this is not the cause of the problem.
It is important that the children don;t go to bed with a full bladder, so excessive beverage consumption before bed tie should be avoided.
Also to be avoided are caffeinated beverages as these have a diuretic affect.
Waking in the middle of the night and retention control should be encouraged through positive reenforcement from the parents. Negative responses such as anger and impatience will only serve to increase the five year old child’s stress levels and lower their self-esteem, neither of which is helpful to solve the underlying problem. The child should not be made to feel shamed of these episodes, they should only be encouraged to break the habit.
Children should not have their diets changed or be medicated in any way in an attempt to stop bed wetting without direct approval from the child’s doctor. Doing so might add further stress to the child which will not help at all with the underlying problem.
